Dark Events are randomly generated actions of the aliens - just as in the core version of XCOM 2. In the last mission it lead to me having a pod in front and one behind, oh, and of course the BQ who dropped. instead of a couple of turns to go, it's more like 4-5 turns to go. Periodically you will get the option to go on "Guerrilla Operations," where you can choose one mission, and succeeding that one mission will prevent the aliens from completing one Shenanigan/Dark Event. Dark Events are shenanigans that the aliens/ADVENT get up to that, if completed, will provide them with bonuses (or cause you to suffer penalties) for (usually) about a month.
